RESERVING A PUP
Please read and scroll down ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE. We are always accepting reservations on current and future litters. A nonrefundable deposit of $1,000 is required to reserve a Paint River Setter puppy. We have a high percentage deposit on pups because the decision to do breedings is largely in part based on demand. We turn away wonderful hunting families all the time when we have pregnant females. A strong deposit insures our puppy purchasers are committed for a puppy as agreed upon.
This deposit is to hold your position on agreed upon calendar breeding season. Deposit is only rolled forward to following breeding season in the event we are unable to provide a puppy for your in our agreed upon calendar breeding season. For no other reasons are deposits carried forward.
CLIENT SALE POLICY
All PRS puppy owners must own their own home, have a fenced in yard (physical or electric) and have their PRS pup live indoors with them as a family companion.
OUR BUYERS ARE FAMILIES THAT ARE LOOKING FOR A LOVING FAMILY COMPANION THAT HAS EXCELLENT BIRD DOG POTENTIAL ON WILD BIRDS. WE DO NOT SELL TO HOMES WHO INTEND TO BREED OR COMPETE UNLESS THEY ARE A PART OF THE PRS PROGRAM.
DUE TO THE SOFT INTELLIGENT NATURE OF OUR SETTERS— PRS PROHIBITS THE USE OF FLANK COLLARS IN TRAINING STEADINESS AND CLASSIC FORCED FETCHING METHODS ON OUR PUPPIES IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT.
THESE TRAINING METHODS WORK WELL COLLECTIVELY FOR MANY BREEDS AND TYPES WHEN DONE PROPERLY. HOWEVER, CERTAIN LINES OF SETTERS, INCLUDING OURS, THAT HAVE A SOFTNESS AND VARIABLE TRACKING/STALKING/POINT STYLE DO NOT DO WELL WITH CERTAIN TRAINING TECHNIQUES.
WE BREED SETTERS THAT WILL STALK AND SET AT TIMES. FLANK COLLARS STAND THE POTENTIAL TO DISALLOW OUR SETTERS TO BE SETTERS TO A DEGREE. WE WANT TO INSURE THAT ALL OUR BUYERS ARE ENCOURAGING THEIR PUP TO BE WHAT WE HAVE BRED THEM TO BE.
PUP DEPARTURE
ALL PRS puppies depart the week they turn 8 weeks old. Official pick up date is determined when the puppies are 2 weeks old. At that time clients can make their arrangements to pick up their puppies. Puppies must be picked up in person. Therefore travel options are by plane and flying with pup home in cabin or driving out to PRS homestead and back. Selection occurs 2-3 days prior to pup departure. There are multiple small airports within one to two hours travel from our home.
OUR HEALTH GUARANTEE
Our setter puppies receive several dewormings, and usually have had one vaccine depending upon age at the time of pick up. Paint River provides a three-year health guarantee, providing you follow our health and replacement puppy guidelines, on any congenital diseases that visibly impact the dog’s health.
COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH SCREENINGS
We use Embark Veterinary (click on this link to learn some more) the leading advanced DNA testing company in the country. Embark Veterinary is a research partner with the university of Cornell. Our Breeder Kit tests for many different genetic disorders, inbreeding coefficients, genetic relatedness for mean kinships, cross referencing levels and locations of homozygosity and much more! All PRS breeding dogs undergo this DNA testing in addition to vet exams for overall total body health for heart,eyes,and hips.
PLANNING FOR A PUP
The our breeding season typically consists of puppies being born every year between November and May. Our puppy owners need to be prepared to pick up their new little buddy between January and July. Sometimes mother nature doesn’t like to play according to our plans but we do our best to have puppies during this time period to keep the flow of training and hunting season streamline for life here in the Northwoods. If your litter happens to be a summer born litter your deposit is still committed to that litter in that calendar year.
Whether you are ready now or in a few years it’s never too early to plan for your next puppy! We often have a waiting list for our puppies. Wait times depend upon number of litters, litter sizes and ratio of male to female puppies with how they stack up to current reservations. It can be hard to predict but the best time to plan for your next hunting family partner is now, regardless of the timetable.

We also have a few closely related females in the program that we’ve bred, raised and assessed for the program that have passed our standards of excellence not shown on the site. Photos will be made available of those dogs in discussion. We look forward to reviewing your puppy application and connecting! If puppy price is higher than standard on certain breeding dogs it will be listed as such under their profiles.

Paint River Setters standard base cash puppy purchase price is $2,800 (for puppies 8 weeks of age). The balance of the purchase price is due upon pick up. Puppy pick up is at our home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Individual litters will sometimes have a different cost per puppy based on which sires and dams are used, due to logistics to make certain pairings happen and/or A.I. breeding at the veterinary repro specialist. At the time you place your deposit you will know the anticipated purchase price from that litter. In the event we need to raise our puppy purchase price when you have a reservation you are responsible for the most current price on our pups.
Sometimes we need to raise our prices to ensure giving the dogs the best possible care when our expenses increase or if there are additional funds required for the logistics to make a particular breeding occur.
You are welcome to have your non-refundable deposit refunded strictly due to this reason as we would never force you into a contract not knowing your financial obligation.

The PRS Vimeo On Demand series — THE WARREN WAY, is highly recommended for purchase when you buy a puppy from us. Signing up for the video series when your puppy is 2 weeks old is recommended. This series covers EVERYTHING Kyle does with his puppies from 8 weeks old all the way up to the pup’s first hunt season. Unedited training videos in obedience, bird work and retrieve. Get all the explanations and watch a handful of puppies related to your puppet brought up THE WARREN WAY. If you have access to training birds and the time then you are the best trainer for your PRS puppy!
